Seeking Board of Directors Members
OARS is seeking dynamic and engaged Board Members, particularly those reflecting the diversity of our communities. If you have a passion for making a difference locally, this is your opportunity!
OARS' Board of Directors governs, oversees policy and direction, advises, and assists with the leadership and general promotion of OARS in order to support the organization’s mission and needs.
About us: OARS is the watershed organization for the Sudbury, Assabet, and Concord Rivers. The watershed lies about 20 miles west of Boston, stretches from Lowell to Hopkinton, Berlin to Wayland and includes 29 miles with the Federal designation of "Wild & Scenic Rivers."
OARS uses research, advocacy, and education to ensure that these beautiful rivers will continue to provide clean and abundant water, exceptional recreational opportunities, and rich wildlife habitat for the benefit of all our communities—all within a short drive of Boston, Lowell, and Worcester.
Founded in 1986, OARS currently has approximately 800 members, a 12-member Board of Directors, 5 staff, and over 150 volunteers.
General Expectations of Board Members:
- Attend and participate in quarterly Board meetings and important related meetings
- Stay informed about organization matters, prepare well for meetings, and review and comment on minutes, financial reports and other pertinent reports
- Actively participate in the organization’s financial oversite, strategic planning, and annual evaluation
- Make a serious commitment to participate actively in committee work
- Volunteer for, and willingly accept and complete, assignments
- Be an ambassador for the organization and participate in fundraising and outreach activities
- Work as a team player and build collegial working relationships with other board members that contribute to consensus
- Make OARS a top priority in your annual giving
